Chelsea made an opening bid for USA international winger Christian Pulisic, according to the Evening Standard.
The Blues hope this will weaken Borussia Dortmund resolve to hold onto the player next summer. The Bundesliga outfit are publicly stating they want £70m for the 20-year-old sensation despite the player’s contract only having 18-months remaining.
That time sensitivity led Chelsea to reportedly try and drive the price downwards. It’s a strategy which is likely to fail; Dortmund, while keen to cash in on their prize asset, will not do so cheaply. News of Chelsea’s bid will already be on the desks of decision-makers at the Bernabeu and Anfield.
Pulisic has his own ideas as well and it’s claimed Chelsea aren’t his preferred destination; that is Liverpool. The American, born in Hershey, Pennsylvania, is keen to join Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool revolution. Klopp was the first-team coach at Dortmund when the youngster moved to the Westfalenstadion.
Chelsea are keen to press ahead with a deal and are willing to use Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Thorgen Hazard, 25, as a bargaining chip. The Blues sold the player with a buy-back clause which they are considering activating before selling on to Dortmund.
However, as Real Madrid will attest, It’s a dangerous game to play. Blues striker Alvaro Morata found himself returning to the Bernabeu and staying after no clubs were willing to pay the price demanded by Real.
There are plenty of twists to this tale yet.
